A Homespun Christmas Series, Part 2: Making Pom-Poms

In this blog post, I will share with you what I learned when making pom-poms using a Pom-Pom maker (manufactured by Clover).

Last month, I knitted hats for the girls. Ellie wanted a pom-pom on hers. I was planning to make one the old-fashioned way with cardboard; however, because I also wanted the girls to help me make pom-poms for Christmas decor, I thought that it might be easier to use a pom-pom maker. I ordered a set of four from Amazon.

They can also be purchased in the set of the large or a set of the small as I have included below.

Because I am trying to decorate the tree with natural fibers in the theme of a homespun Christmas, I started out making pom-poms with cotton yarn that I had gotten for knitting dishcloths—the type of yarn is linked below except I have ecru instead of white.

However, I decided to try a chunkier yarn. And so, I went to Hobby Lobby the other week to find chunky cotton yarn. This is the type of yarn that I found: Yarn Bee Cotton XXL Yarn.

Because I was planning to use these on the tree, I wanted large pom-poms and started with the largest maker that I have.

After making two pom-poms this size, I realized that I didn’t have enough yarn remaining on the first skein of Yarn Bee yarn to make a third one that size. I selected the next size, and I had just enough to make one more of that size.

So, one 50-yd. skein of Yarn Bee Cotton XXL makes three pom-poms—two with a size of 3 3/8-inches and one measuring approximately 2 1/2 inches.

Here is a video that I watched before getting started to make sure that I was using the Clover Pom Pom makers correctly:

And I found that sharp scissors are really helpful for cutting through the yarn.

These Pom Poms are great for using as a Christmas tree ornament and after Christmas look lovely in a wooden bowl as winter decor. I have also seen wreaths of Pom Poms, but I haven’t made one of those yet.
